David Vicevich
Over his career, David L. Vicevich has handled thousands of cases. The smaller market of Butte, Montana and his educational background provided a unique opportunity for him to practice in a vast swath of areas including criminal, appellate, land use, bankruptcy, administrative/licensing, tax, employment, personal injury, workers’ compensation, immigration and family law cases. Similarly, the cases were litigated in every level of court in Butte and the rest of Montana; federal, state and municipal as well as in front of countless administrative agencies and political boards and commissions. His career began at a young age and he litigated difficult high profile cases in his twenties that many lawyers would shy away from their entire career. He had nearly a decade of experience before the age at which the average lawyer graduates from law school. His roots are in the libertarian ideal of Montana, and he knows and appreciates the values of Montana juries and judges. His skill and education, however, is that of a large market attorney. In the past several years he has represented clients in courts in Billings, Butte, Missoula, Bozeman, Helena, Livingston, Dillon and most places in between. His clientele includes individuals and entities located in Canada and as far as Texas, Florida, and even Nigeria. In 2012 Vicevich expanded his business into the State of Washington. He is licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in Montana, all state courts in Washington, and the U.S. Tax Court. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the criminal law sections of the State Bar of Montana and the Washington State Bar Association.
Born to the children of Croatian and Irish immigrants, David L. Vicevich was raised in the freedom loving, live-and-let-live environment of Butte, Montana. He attended Butte High School and captained the school’s debate program. Consistently ranked as one of the top ten policy debaters in Montana he was the first student ever at Butte High School to receive a triple ruby ranking from the National Forensics League, earning the distinction in 1992. At an early age Vicevich began his career in advocacy and public affairs serving as the student representative on the Butte School District No. 1 Board in 1991-92.
Following high school he attended Gonzaga University’s prestigious honors program in Spokane, Washington for his undergraduate studies, earning honors degrees in history, philosophy, and political science and participating in university’s decorated debate program. The program was designed with an overwhelming core curriculum taught with class sizes under twenty in the Socratic Method. It taught its students not facts in the moment, but how to learn for a lifetime. Vicevich was inducted into the National Jesuit Honors Society, Alpha Sigma Nu; was published in Charter magazine for his study of ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia; and was designated a Newman Scholar for upholding the ideals of, and selected to teach, how to learn during his time at Gonzaga.
David attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis’ top twenty law program, specializing in environmental/land use and criminal law and graduating in 1999. After interning as a prosecutor in 1997 and 1998 with the Butte-Silver Bow County Attorney’s office and developing a passion for fly fishing, Vicevich returned permanently to Butte in 1999. By 2001 he had established his own firm in historic uptown Butte and by the end of 2002 defended his first homicide case. He expanded his practice in 2003 by becoming a founding partner of Joseph, Vicevich & Whelan. In 2005 Vicevich’s name was placed on the Wall of Tolerance in Memphis, Tennessee by the Southern Poverty Law Center in recognition of his efforts to seek a more just society. In 2012 David formed Vicevich Law, returning to historic uptown Butte and joining the cultural, artistic and professional renaissance blossoming there.
In 2018, Vicevich earned a Master of Laws in Cyber, Telecommunications, and Space Law from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law.. The LL.M program at UNL was established with a grant from NASA and a partnership with the U.S. Air Force Strategic Command. Vicevich attended on a NASA scholarship and his thesis focused on cyber insurance. He expanded his practice in the Northwest to include consulting on cyber insurance, e-commerce, and data breach response.
